Widow Shot Dead At Wake For Murdered Colombian Community Leader Husband

The widow of a murdered Colombian community leader has been shot dead by armed gunmen at his wake after they stormed her mother-in-law’s house.

The victim has been named as Rosalba Carmenza Tarazona Ortega, age not reported, and she was shot dead in the municipality of Saravena, which is located in the Department of Arauca, in eastern Colombia, on Wednesday, 26th January, at approximately 2pm.

She was attending the wake of her late husband, Colombian social leader Alvaro Pena, age not reported, who was murdered just one day prior, on Tuesday, 25th January.

After shooting her dead, the armed gunmen fled the victim’s mother-in-law’s home, and the authorities had not announced any arrests at the time of writing. The other people in attendance fled the building after the criminals opened fire on the victim.

She was shot dead just one day after her husband was murdered. He was reportedly a community leader and the President of the Community Action Board of the La Union neighbourhood in Saravena.

He was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday when armed gunmen stormed his home in Tame, which is a town also in the Department of Arauca. It is currently unclear if the armed gunmen who killed him also killed his widow.

Colonel Fredy Perez, age not reported, the head of the Arauca Police Department, confirmed that the victim was shot dead at about 2pm on Wednesday but did not provide any further information regarding the investigation.

The police investigations into the two murders are currently ongoing.
