This is the moment a hapless white van man ploughs into two women standing next to their broken down car on the motorway, leaving the pair sandwiched between the two vehicles.

CCTV footage captured the moment car driver Sultan Ozdemir and her passenger Fatma Zehra Kilic were hit by the van as they stood behind their white car on the D-100 motorway in Turkey’s biggest city of Istanbul.

Their car was damaged when it hit a roadside barrier and came to a halt in the middle lane but the women did not have an emergency reflective triangle to warn other vehicles to the hazard.

Instead, the pair decided to stand behind the car, leaving their hazard lights on, while they waited for a mechanic to arrive to repair the vehicle or tow it to a garage.

But a van smashed into them, crushing them between his vehicle and their car, after he failed to see the obstacle in time to slam on the brakes or serve around it.

The women also appeared to not see his van speeding towards them as they made no attempt to get out of the way.

Van driver Armagan Eryilmaz got out of his vehicle to try to help the woman and called police and paramedics for help.

Ms Ozdemir and Ms Kilic were both taken by ambulance to the city’s Bakirkoy Dr Sadi Konuk Research and Training Hospital for treatment to their injuries which were described as serious.

Mr Eryilmaz was arrested by police officers and is helping them with their inquiries into the accident in the Bahcelievler district on the European side of Istanbul.

The D-100 runs the length of northern Turkey from the Bulgarian border in the west to the Iranian border in the east.
