This is the moment a huge grey whale is filmed blowing water out of its blowhole apparently to greet a boatload of tourists as it arrives at the Pacific coast of Mexico for the breeding season.

The footage was shared by The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP) and it was recorded in the south-western coast of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur in north-western Mexico.

The footage shows a specimen of grey whale (Eschrichtius robustus) next to a boat greeting some people by expelling water out of its breathing hole.

The amused onlookers are heard saying “bravo!” to the animal.

According to local media, two specimens were seen on 6th December in the area and it marks the beginning of the 2019-2020 whale watching season as lots of tourist sail the coast of Baja California to see the mammals.

The official dates of the season are from 15th December to 30th April 2020.

Reports said grey whales are friendly mammals which usually swim close to the boats letting tourist see them and even touch them if it is done under the right safety measures.

According to CONANP, grey whales swim a route of 12,000 kilometres (7,456 miles) from the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea in Alaska down to the coastal lagoons in the southwest of Baja California and they are always very punctual for their annual date.

The whales use these protected shallow, warm waters as calving nurseries with juvenile whales arriving first and mothers with their calves appearing later at the beginning of February, according to National Geographic.
