A Welsh street gave their ‘Clap For The NHS’ a local flavour when they turned it into singing the Welsh national anthem.

The song Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau which means “Old Land of My Fathers” in Welsh was sung by the entire street as people across the country joined in the clap for the NHS to show support for health service workers.

A video which has now been posted online on Facebook where it notched up almost 400,000 views and 1,500 comments.

Speaking to CEN, Brendan Hopkins, 35, said it was not planned but when he took out a speaker and suggested it, it had just happened naturally with everybody who was out on Dumfries Street in Treorchy, which is in the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales, joining in.

He said that dozens of people had sung with him and that they had done it because they wanted to offer their own version of support for the NHS.

As they were singing their song, landmarks across the country were being illuminated in blue to celebrate the third week of the “Clap Four Carers” campaign.

Many in Wales and in need in the rest of the country had hoped that the lockdown would end sooner, but last week the First Minister of Waled was the first to declare that the lockdown would continue.

The video attracted 1,500 comments from people like Carla McKinney who said: “I remember when Charlie was invested Prince of Wales. They made every school kid learn the Welsh National Anthem. The Welsh have beautiful voices.”

And Karl Newberry who wrote: “Words can not describe the feeling listening to this.”
