This footage shows torrents of water gushing out of a dam’s floodgates to reduce pressure in the area following a period of heavy rain that has left Argentine communities stranded.

The incident was filmed at the Celestino Gelsi Dam in El Cadillal in the northern Argentine province of Tucuman during a “normal procedure to reduce water levels”, according to head of Civil Defence Fernando Torres.

Security protocols at the hydroelectric dam were enabled when the water levels at the Loro and Sali rivers began to rise and pose a threat to communities in the area.

One family in Las Mesadas had to be evacuated due to flood fears, according to reports.

Some rivers have burst their banks and some communities have been left stranded, according to local media.

Torres said that a helicopter has been scouring the area since the heavy rains began to offer assistance to residents affected by flash floods.

No fatalities or injuries have been reported so far.

The Celestino Gelsi Dam, located in north-western Tucuman, is the main supplier of water and energy in the Argentine province.

The dam is situated on Sali River around 13 miles from the city of San Miguel Tucuman.

Fernando Robledo, head of the Water Society of Tucuman assured residents that the purification process and water services continue as normal despite the opening of the floodgates.
