Media in Indonesia reported that two residents of Manleten Village in Belu, East Nusa Tenggara, had gone to a warung – a family-run small eatery – for a plate of sayur lodeh on 9th December.

Sayur lodeh is a local dish of mixed vegetables stewed in coconut curry soup.

But one of the two customers, named in reports as 30-year-old Petrus Watu, was horrified when he found on his plate what looked like the tip of a human thumb, with the nail still attached, halfway through his meal.

His photo showing the stomach-churning find was later posted online and caused a stir among the local community.

Belu Police chief Yosep Krisbianto confirmed the man’s worst fears on 12th December when he revealed that the horror find was, indeed, a severed human digit.

He stated: “We already asked the doctors immediately and there has been a confirmation from the doctors that it was a slice of human thumb.”

The police chief said the body part likely belonged to an adult, but added that no staff at the warung had injuries to their fingers.

He revealed that officers are still questioning witnesses, among them the owner of the small business, as well as the owner of the tofu factory that is said to have supplied the ingredients.

At the time of reporting, the identity of the missing thumb’s owner remained unclear.
