They were reportedly driving in a Toyota Hilux pickup truck when the vehicle became caught in the snow road where temperatures dropped zero degrees.

Reports state the two men decided to look for help on foot while Onate stayed in the vehicle. Her brother reported the group as missing when she did not return home on September 18th and a video shows rescuers from Civil Defence finding her the following day.

She is visibly emotional, saying “thank God” and asking who had alerted the authorities. Rescuers continued searching for the two men but found their dead bodies the following day. According to the authorities, the victims died from severe hypothermia.

Civil Defence chief Martin Giusti told local reporters the girl was found with little warm clothing. He added that an investigation had been launched to clarify why they took that route as local authorities had warned that it might be blocked by heavy snow.
