These images show how these snow-capped volcanoes are visible from 80 miles away in the Colombian capital after air pollution dropped during the country’s coronavirus lockdown.

The images were taken from the Colombian capital city of Bogota showing the ‘Nevado del Ruiz’ and ‘Nevado de Tolima’ volcanoes located approximately 130 kilometres (80 miles) from the city, on 7th April.

Local media report the volcanoes could be seen from such a distance as Colombian citizens have been forced to stay in their homes since Tuesday 24th March to stop the spread of COVID-19, leading to a reduction of pollution in the city.

The Bogota Secretary of the Environment told local media: “The obligatory quarantine, the change in meteorological conditions, wind and rain have made the quality of air in the city improve.

“The air is cleaner and the sky is clearer in the capital which has allowed many citizens to observe the peaks of Tolima and del Ruiz .“

The environmental government body also posted a picture showing the differences in the view from Bogota just days after the lockdown started to a little over a week later demonstrating the startling changes in the landscape.

They captioned the picture: “Thanks to the commitment of the citizens and the meteorological conditions Bogota continues to have favourable levels of air quality leaving us with spectacular landscapes every day” while also inviting citizens to share their own pictures.

The images show photos of the volcanoes shared by locals while others show the thick pollution that normally covers the city blocking their view.

Both volcanoes are part of ‘Los Nevados National Park’ in the Andes Mountains which is the longest continental mountain range in the world with a length of 4,300 miles.

According to the latest figures by Johns Hopkins University, Colombia has reported 2,223 cases of COVID-19 leading to 69 deaths.
