The startling incident occurred in the village of Micesti in the Arges County of Romania after heavy rains caused flash flooding.

The water is running brown and a seemingly endless torrent of rubbish is being carried along by the fast-flowing water.

In the clip, the man recording can be heard saying: “Christ! How long and how much of this can the planet support?”

The video has been posted on social media where it has received over 1.5 million views.

Local media report a team from the Environmental Guard has been sent to inspect the area and identify the origin of the waste.

Local Environment Commissioner Alexandru Vajan said: “If other areas are identified where waste is still stored, disposal measures will be undertaken.”

The authorities are investigating but Romanian law states only those who are caught in flagrancy whilst dumping rubbish can be fined.

The investigation is ongoing and no arrests have been reported.
