This is the moment – with over 10 million views – a golden retriever is suddenly attacked in a lake by a territorial black swan and the poor pooch is sent fleeing to his owners.

The clip was recorded by the pooch’s owner, Ms Zhang, who says her dog ‘Xishi’ was attacked by the same swan last year.

The footage from 15th November shows Xishi doggy-paddling along the edge of the artificial lake in the city of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province in south-western China.

The black swan is one of several captive-bred specimens kept by the management office of the Hengda Jinbi Tianxia Residential District where Ms Zhang lives.

In the video, the bird spots Xishi from afar and darts towards its archenemy, racing across the lake as Ms Zhang says: “Oh no. Here comes the swan!”

The territorial black swan jumps on Xishi’s back and begins hitting the dog with its wings and pecking at its head.

The pooch manages to keep itself above water and swims to the safety of the shore.

The screaming Ms Zhang calls her pet back to the walkway where her family is standing, with the swan then gliding away after it is satisfied it has repelled the intruder.

Ms Zhang said neither her pouch nor the swan was injured during the incident, which is not expected to be their last encounter.
