After hammering away at the water surface with his fists and a stick, he finally makes a hole and manages to grab the dog.

He is last seen bringing the animal to the bank as onlookers clap and cheer his brave efforts.

An eyewitness called Hugo told local media: “I heard the dog barking frantically and I saw it in the middle of the lake. The first thing I did was to call the emergency services.

“The police arrived and the guy was discussing with them about going into the water, but the cops preferred to wait for the fire brigade to come.”

According to reports, the dog was old and blind. After it was rescued, it was taken to a nearby building where Hugo and a police officer tried to care for the animal.

Despite their best efforts, the old dog reportedly suffered a heart attack and died.
