The unusual viral clip was filmed by local resident Ms Cui, who spotted the group of casual gamblers on the pavement next to her bus stop.
The footage from the city of Tieling in north-eastern China’s Liaoning Province shows the four elderly men and women appearing to be dressed in thick winter clothes.
But in order to keep themselves warm as temperatures remain in the freezing range of minus 14 and minus 4 degrees Celsius, they cover themselves with the big plastic sheet while huddled around a small table.
Me Cui said: “It was so cold that day. It had just finished snowing and was under minus 10 degrees Celsius.
“I walked past and saw the four of them there.
“It was cold, so they found a large plastic sheet and played cards underneath.”
Social media users have questioned why the group did not play cards in their local community centre instead.
However, commenters said they would likely have been prohibited from gambling, which is technically forbidden in mainland China and only legal through the state lottery system.
However, relevant laws are not strictly enforced in instances involving casual or private games for small monies.
Social media user ‘Mengxiang Qifei De Yu’ wrote: “Gosh, that’s some gambling addiction!”
‘Lengyu Xiye’ added: “If someone were to fart in there, the consequences would be unthinkable.”
