Her male companion also has a plastic bag over his head with a slit cut out at the front as they walk through the aisles.

Netizens were quick to point out that using a plastic bag to protect from the virus comes with a risk of suffocation, with ‘BasteiroV’ commenting: “If they are not killed by coronavirus they will die from suffocation.”

‘Jhm_sal’ said: “If you die you cannot be infected, those three idiots in the video will end up dying from suffocation”.

‘PerkyTranslator’ added: “I love it, they are wearing bags as if they are useful, but the kids, nothing”.

The spread of coronavirus in Madrid has seen more than 1,000 confirmed cases and left many supermarkets with their shelves empty.

Thirty-one people have died from the virus in Madrid with 55 victims in total in Spain from 2,277 confirmed cases.

The Association of Spanish Supermarket Chains have asked citizens to remain calm with their shopping, saying supermarkets are guaranteed to have products.
