This is the moment a Mexican mayoral candidate is shot dead while speaking at a campaign rally.

Alma Rosa Barragan Santiago was running for election to City Hall for the municipality of Moroleon, population 47,261, in the Mexican state of Guanajuato.

The candidate for the centre-left Citizens’ Movement party was shot dead as she spoke at a campaign rally in the neighbourhood of La Manguita on the evening of 25th May.

Alma Rosa was vouching for the residents of Moroleon when she was hit by a hail of bullets. Her last words before she fell to the ground were: “Sports neglected, the streets (neglected), all of us as citizens neglected for many years.”

According to those present, she had promised increased security for residents just minutes earlier.

Witnesses also said that the gunmen who shot Alma Rosa were in the crowd at the time.

Her two adult children were present at the rally and witnessed their mother collapse to the ground after a number of gunshots filled the air.

They have since said that they do not believe the killers even knew who their mother was.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced on 1st June that a number of arrests had been made in connection with the crime.

Alma Rosa’s daughter, Alma Denisse Sanchez Barragan, has replaced her mother as the Citizens’ Movement candidate for Moroleon.

Campaigning ends today (2nd June) and elections will take place on 6th June.

The investigation into the killing continues as the suspects remain in custody.
