A 26-year-old pilot has died after suffering a “dizzy spell” shortly after takeoff and crashing in a field.

The plane crash took place in the municipality of Velez-Malaga in the city of Malaga in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia, after taking off from the Leoni Benabu airfield at 12.20 pm on 11th October.

According to the newspaper MalagaHoy, the pilot reported that he was feeling unwell on takeoff and suddenly felt dizzy.

Sources from the Real Aeroclub de Malaga said the plane started to climb before suddenly spiralling to the ground.

The emergency services arrived at the crash scene and attended the two pilots trapped in the cockpit.

The local authorities confirmed that the pilot died on the spot while his colleague was rushed to the Regional Hospital of Malaga by ambulance.

A Real Aeroclub de Malaga spokesperson said that they were aware the accident could not have been caused by a technical fault or pilot error as the victim was “an experienced person”.

The spokesperson added: “We knew that something had happened to the pilot.”

In the small plane, the pilot sits in front with the co-pilot seated behind which is why the victim bore the brunt of the crash.

The spokesperson said that the co-pilot “does not know how to fly” yet.

The plane belonged to the victim’s father and two of his associates.

The investigation is ongoing.
