This is the moment a huge 11-storey building unexpectedly collapses at the start of a demotion process with no security measures in place.

The incident took place in the district of Bahcelievler in the north-western Turkish city of Istanbul after the building had already been evacuated for being unsafe.

With a team in place, workers began the demolition process, but the building collapsed unexpectedly before security measures were introduced, according to local media.

The building had already been evacuated and was planned to be demolished by the local authorities in a controlled manner.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the unexpected collapse, which was filmed by an onlooker and posted to social media where it has been widely shared.

In the clip, workmen are seeing spraying the lower floors with water just before the top half of the building collapses and topples forwards.

The structure sends dust and debris in all directions and covers the workmen operating nearby.

Netizen ‘Haydar’ said: “Those people are stupid. It looks like they started on the lower floors, which is probably why the demolition got out of control.”

‘Zvonimir Boban’ commented: “If this is a controlled demolition, I wouldn’t want to see what an uncontrolled one looks like!”

Meanwhile, an anonymous netizen wrote: “These crumbling buildings are proof of negligence. Who is approving the construction of these shoddy flats?”
