Two days after the abduction of the five young students, the other four were found dead in the back of a pickup truck that belonged to one of the victims. Valeria’s lifeless body was then found on Friday, 18 February.

A childhood acquaintance named in local media reports as Benilde Balderas said: “We were not friends, we were schoolmates, lifelong acquaintances, we had friends in common, I know her family and we come from the same place.

“I had hoped that Valeria would be found alive because I have a mother, sisters and friends. And it would be the worst thing in the world to see them taken away from me like this.”

They are currently wanted, and the authorities had not announced their arrests at the time of writing.

State prosecutor Jose Murillo Ruiseco said that a search of a house has been carried out, which they believe is key to the successful outcome of the investigation, which is ongoing.
