A university has sacked a canteen staff member after this video – seen over five million times online – showed him cleaning a kitchen with a broom before plunging it into a cooking wok filled with dirty soap water.

Footage of the seemingly unhygienic practice was leaked online and also appears to show the employee, surnamed Long, sweeping the floor with the broom on 4th December.

Jiangxi University of Science and Technology, located in the city of Ganzhou in East China’s Jiangxi Province, confirmed in a statement on 9th December that the incident took place in its Huangjin Campus canteen.

The building serves the College of Applied Science, reports said.

The university’s statement said Long and his colleagues – employed through a catering company – were cleaning the kitchen after providing meals for students.

Long dips the broom in the soapy water inside the large cooking vessel before using the same cleaning tool to scrub the stovetop and oily walls, the video shows.

The same wok he uses as a bucket is also used to cook meals for the university’s students, while the school says he scrubbed the wok using the broom too.

The school said it had dismissed Long for the poor cleaning practices and also fined the catering company 5,000 RMB (540 GBP).

It had issued warnings to Long’s supervisors and said it welcomed further inspection by the city’s health bureau.
