When the cops searched the car they reportedly found two crates with a strong fish smell before noticing noise and movement coming inside.

According to local media, when they opened the wooden crates they discovered two sea lions in cramped conditions and suffering with signs of dehydration.

The marine animals have been taken to a veterinary clinic to be examined before the local authorities decide what to do with them.

According to local media, the sea lions were on their way to the Mexico City International Airport bound for an unspecified destination in Japan when the police stopped the men.

Reports said they did not have the necessary paperwork for such animals and the suspects have been placed in police custody as the authorities continue their investigation.
