Police spokesman Wong Sai-kwan said that the accident happened at around 10.20am after the lorry had broken down on the motorway.

The lorry driver, a 54-year-old man surnamed So, had placed objects on the road to make other vehicles aware that he was stationary.

About 10 minutes later, the double-decker bus came along and rammed into the back of the lorry with So and a woman inside.

Meanwhile, the 59-year-old bus driver, surnamed Lam, was reportedly thrown from the vehicle and was declared dead at the scene.

The lorry driver was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with serious injuries and died about an hour after the accident, according to local media.

The 16 injured people were also taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. One woman was in the lorry while 15 bus passengers, 10 female and five male, were inside the double-decker bus.

Wong Sai-kwan confirmed that the police are investigating the accident while reminding motorists that if they find themselves broken down on the motorway, “they should go to the roadside and seek help rather than putting something on the road”.
