A father of three who fell into depression because of the money he lost on the crypto market has reportedly shot his wife and then himself after a bitter row about the losses.

Minibus driver Yunus Emre Uyaner, 28, shot his wife of seven years, 28-year-old Melike Yagmur Uyaner, during an argument about the lost money in the district of Seyhan in the south-eastern Turkish city of Adana at around 9am yesterday (27th December).

After taking a bullet to the head, the woman collapsed to the floor covered in blood.

The incident took place as suspect’s father, Hakan Uyaner, was arriving home, and the dad reportedly tried to prize the gun from his son’s hand.

The suspect is reported as having said to his father: “I will shoot you, too”. However, he then reportedly put the gun to his own head and pulled the trigger.

The dad called the police, and medical teams were dispatched to the address.

First aid was administered at the scene before the injured man and wife were taken by ambulance to the Seyhan State Hospital, both in a critical condition, where they underwent surgery.

The mother had given birth to twin girls only two months ago, and the couple also had an older son. The three children were at home at the time of the incident, and it is not clear if the older child witnessed the shooting.

Turkish media reported that the suspect had lost TRY 450,000 (GBP 28,400) on the cryptocurrency market about two months ago and fell into depression as a result.

He was reportedly receiving counselling, but was stressed and was said to often argue with his wife and relatives.

The suspect had reportedly stayed in another flat the night before the incident and had also threatened his wife.

Local media reported that the woman later passed away, while efforts to save the suspect are ongoing.

Fortunes can be made and lost in the cryptocurrency market, which is volatile because it is still at a nascent stage compared to other currencies and investment tools.
