These images show the bizarre egg inside an egg that has bamboozled vets after a hen in Turkey laid it.

The startling incident took place on a farm in the city of Bursa in western Turkey’s Marmara region and local vets are now studying the egg.

In the image, it can be seen how an egg had developed inside the shell of another egg.

Local media report the anomaly is a rare occurrence and local vets say it is the first time they have dealt with such an incident.

Farmer Ismail Ozkan, 53, said: “I was shocked when I saw that there was another one inside the chicken egg. I reported this to specialists at the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the university. “

According to experts, the rare phenomenon occurs when the egg passes through the oviduct of the bird but then as a result of repeated ovulation, it returns and the process repeats.

Musafa Akdag, a Professor from the Department of Veterinary Medicine said: “I read descriptions of such cases in literature, but in practice this is the first time I have come across it. This is a rather interesting topic to study.”

Some social media users were wowed by the images while others were sceptical, such as ‘Eyup Bey’ who wrote: “This is not possible. If it were possible, people would have learned how to grow hens carrying an egg in an egg long ago. It is more profitable to get two instead of one.”
