Turkish Drink Driver Kills Self And Family Of 6 In NYE Crash

A drink-driver has reportedly caused an accident in the early hours of New Year’s Day, killing himself and a family of six in another car.

A German-plated car driven by Nuri Bal, 60, collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Ibrahim Ergun, 47, in the district of Aksaray in the Turkish province of the same name at around 1am on 1st January.

Bal died in the accident along with the family in the other car, named as Ergun, his wife Semiha, 54, their daughters Rumeysa, 12, Sumeyra, 19, Ceyda Ugurlu, 22, and their grandchild Asel Ugurlu, 3.

The emergency services arrived and took the dead bodies to the morgue at the Aksaray Training and Research Hospital after carrying out a preliminary investigation at the scene.

During the preliminary probe, the police took blood samples from the drivers involved and determined that Bal was over the limit with a blood-alcohol level of 243 mg.

The police also said that Bal lost control of his vehicle and veered into the opposite lane at a speed of around 180kph (112mph).

According to reports, the family of six was killed while returning home from a New Year’s Eve bash in the city centre.

The investigation into the fatal crash is ongoing.
