Trans Woman Stabbed To Death Outside Apartment Block In Turkey

A trans woman has been stabbed to death outside her apartment block in Turkey.

Gunay Ozyildiz, 48, was found dead in a pool of blood by the entrance to her apartment building on Inonu Street in the district of Karabaglar in the western Turkish province of Izmir on Sunday, 16th January.

Police officers arrived on the scene and determined that the victim had been stabbed in the neck.

Paramedics also arrived at the apartment block, but they could only confirm Ozyildiz’s death, and her body was taken to the morgue of the Izmir Forensic Medicine Institute.

According to local media, homicide investigators reviewed the CCTV footage in the area and identified two suspects in connection with the stabbing.

As a result, the police arrested one 20-year-old man, identified by his initials O.A. and who is believed to have carried out the attack, and a suspect named as Z.A., who accompanied the alleged killer.

Both suspects are being held in custody as the investigation continues.

Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, especially after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July last year.

According to the 2021 Annual Data Report announced by the ‘We Will Stop Femicide Platform’, 280 women were killed by men in 2021, while 217 women were found dead in suspicious circumstances.

According to the ‘Monument Counter’, an online platform in honour of the victims of femicide in Turkey, which is updated every day, 12 femicides have taken place in the country so far this year.
