This is the moment a fire tears through a carriage of a packed train as shocked passengers look on.

The startling incident was recorded in the East Godavari district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh when the catering carriage of the Yesvantpur-Tatanagar Superfast Express went up in flames.

Local media report staff on the train spotted a small fire in the carriage and immediately stopped the train and turned off the overhead power supply.

The staff are then said to have tried to put out the flames but upon realising they could not do so they separated the burning carriage from the adjacent wagons where passengers were sleeping.

In the video, the catering carriage can be seen burning as it stands alone on the tracks as onlookers record the scenes.

Officials can then be seen putting a hose into the burnt out carriage the following morning.

Reports state one of the adjacent carriages was damaged and had to be replaced before the train continued on its route.

No injuries have been reported in the incident despite a railway official telling local media that the train “was packed” with “hundreds of passengers”.

The official described the workers’ actions as “heroic” adding that they had saved the passengers’ lives.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.
