This is the moment a suspected drink-driver crashes into a concrete traffic divider and ruptures his fuel tank causing a petrol-soaked trail of flames to form behind his car.

The dramatic accident happened on Kaifa Avenue in the county of Wuyi in East China’s Zhejiang Province on the evening of 18th October.

Saloon driver Mr Lv and his girlfriend, Ms Wang, were driving home after a night of heavy drinking when the accident happened.

Mr Lv said he received an urgent phone call from a family member saying his relative had taken ill, so, despite being drunk, he decided to rush home.

The motorist was staring at the satnav when he strayed out of his lane and crashed into the concrete traffic barrier in the middle of the road, Ms Wang told local police.

Traffic camera footage shows Mr Lv’s car destroying a section of the crash barrier and spilling a line of petrol onto the road as his fuel tank ruptures.

The crashing saloon car then sparks a flame which ignites his vehicle as well as spilt petrol, creating a trail of bright flames on the thoroughfare.

Fortunately, the accident did not happen at high speed, and both Mr Lv and Ms Wang were able to escape.

The video shows the pair standing next to the burning car, even opening the passenger-side door to fetch their belongings as the fire grows out of control.

Wuyi traffic police said Mr Lv was so drunk, he did not realise that he had in fact suffered burn injuries on his head, torso and limbs.

He was taken to hospital for treatment and later found fully liable for causing the incident as a result of his drink-driving.

Mr Lv’s licence has been revoked and he will observe a five-year driving ban for the offence.

He continues to receive treatment as a date for his trial is pending.
