Mark Ridgeway, 58, from the city of Kimberly, in Jefferson County, Alabama, USA, lost his life after he was reportedly struck by a rolling bus on Wednesday, 25th January 2023.

The incident reportedly happened before 6.45am in the parking lot of Mortimer Jordan High School where both Ridgeway and his wife Connie worked as teachers.

The 58-year-old father of four was reportedly working as a 10th grade history teacher and bus driver at Mortimer Jordan High School, along with his wife Connie, who was an English teacher at the same institution.

They reportedly had four children together.

On the day of the accident, the 58-year-old 10th grade history teacher was performing a standard check on the bus as he was about to begin the morning route when an unoccupied bus began to roll.

Unable to escape, Ridgeway found himself pinned between the two busses and died instantly on the scene.

Following the incident Principal Craig Kanaday said: “Mark Ridgeway, a graduate of Mortimer Jordan, dedicated his life to serving people.

“He pastored a church until his recent retirement this past summer, all while teaching the students of Mortimer Jordan High School and driving a school bus.

“He was a selfless and devoted person to his faith, his family, and his school.

“As a personal colleague of mine for more than 25 years, Mark leaves behind cherished memories but also a great void among all circles of his life.

“It’s in times like these that I am reminded that life is fragile and precious.”

Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said: “We ask for prayers for the victim’s family and the faculty and staff and student body of Mortimer Jordan.

“As you can imagine, this is a tight-knit community as a whole, a tight-knit faculty and staff as well.

“When you have a faculty member that passes away, it’s going to affect them.

“This is a time we all stick together as a family, we lean on each other. We support the victim’s family.”

Ridgeway’s wife, Connie, who works as an English teacher at the same school, did not make any statements concerning her husband’s death.

But Kanaday stated: “Please keep her, their kids, and the entire Ridgeway family in your prayers.

“We will provide whatever assistance they need in the coming days.”

Classes at the school were cancelled on the day of the incident but resumed on Thursday, 26th January.
