Police in Brazil are investigating the “suspicious” death of a teenage mum in a roadside hotel.

Tragic Melina Eduarda Lopes Manzano, 18, was with her boyfriend at the lodgings on the SP-278 state highway in Ourinhos when she started having convulsions in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

The 19-year-old boyfriend called Melina’s mother, who then called the Mobile Urgent Care Services (SAMU).

But when paramedics arrived on the scene, the young woman was already dead.

Her body was sent for a post-mortem examination, while police sealed off the motel room for forensic investigation.

They recorded Melina’s death as “suspicious”.

In his statement to police, the boyfriend said he had woken up to find Melina feeling unwell.

Civil Police said the victim had only turned 18 on Christmas Day and leaves behind a nine-month-old daughter.

Her cousin later took to social media to defend Melina’s boyfriend from accusations of foul play.

She wrote: “About the death of my cousin Melina Eduarda Lopes Manzano, known as Mel, the guy who was with her did not run away, he called SAMU, did all the procedures, CPR, etc., until rescuers arrived, but the young woman didn’t make it.

“And as for the suspicion of an overdose, know that an overdose is not caused only by drugs. Excessive drinking and energy drinks can also cause one.

“So no more bla bla bla and judging people. She was there of her own free will, and it’s up to God and the courts to judge.”

In some reports, the boyfriend’s age was given as 23.
