Tourists at a Turkish resort were stunned to find a popular beach bizarrely covered in hundreds of oranges.

The unusual incident took place at the beach in the resort town of Erdemli, in the south-eastern Turkish province of Mersin.

According to local reports on 24th March, the oranges were thrown into Arpacbahsis Stream from the orange groves situated at high altitude nearby, and were swept into the Mediterranean Sea by the currents.

The oranges, which are thought to be poured into a stream and then poured into the sea with the current, covered a large part of the coast in Mersin, Turkey. (Newsflash)

The waves then washed the oranges onto the beach in Erdemli, where stunned tourists took photos of the bizarre scene.

The tourists, mainly from Russia, found the situation quite amusing and posed for snaps while their children played games and threw the oranges at one another.

In one photo, a family dog is seen fetching an orange from the waves, presumably chucked in by a playful kid.

It is unclear who allegedly threw the oranges into the stream situated by the orange groves and for what reason.

Reports did not mention if the local council was informed of the hundreds of oranges that washed up on the beach, and the authorities have yet to confirm whether they are investigating the matter.
