This is the moment two tourists beat up an alleged pickpocket amid claims they caught him stealing a phone on the underground.

The startling incident occurred at the Espanya metro station in the city of Barcelona in the Catalonia region of eastern Spain after the group of passengers, reportedly tourists, spotted the alleged thief stealing a mobile phone, according to reports.

In the video, a man in a pink polo neck top can be seen pinning the reported thief against a wall on the station platform before another man comes and punches the alleged criminal.

The man in the pink holds the suspect still as the other passenger punches his back and a woman can be heard shouting in the background.

Onlookers then pile in and can be heard telling the pair to stop beating the alleged pickpocket.

Local media report the two men had spotted the thief stealing a mobile phone on the metro and were beating him to get the phone back.

According to some reports, the pickpocket, reportedly foreign but whose nationality has not been confirmed, was arrested and taken to a police station.

Police sources told local media that there were no injuries reported in the incident and that neither the victim of the alleged thief nor the suspect himself had filed a report.

Local media report volunteers have taken to the Barcelona metro to blow a whistle when they spot a pickpocket on the trains to scare the thieves away in the face of a wave of petty thievery on the transport network.
