A toddler vanished after she jumped into a puddle and disappeared down a rain-filled open manhole hidden underneath while walking home from the nursery with her gran.

Some 200 rescuers, including divers who regularly plunged into the sewers in search of the tot, took part in rescue efforts after the accident at 5pm local time on 11th June.

Officials in the town of Chang’an, which is in Dongguan City in China’s southern Guangdong Province, confirmed that the body of a young girl matching her description was found near a sewage outfall on the morning of 14th June.

The girl’s family members provided a positive identification thereafter, an official statement said.

The girl, who was aged three years and eight months, was walking home from nursery school with her grandmother when she accidentally stepped into the water-filled manhole in the town of Chang’an

The coverless manhole is thought to have been concealed by standing water resulting from the 66 millimetres of rainfall recorded between 9am and 6pm on the day of the incident.

Footage of initial rescue efforts showed the girl’s nan sobbing on the sidelines as firefighters lower themselves into the sewer in search of the toddler.

Officials say the sewer cover was likely pushed off and floated away during the continuous torrential downpour.

It is still unclear whether the child’s family will be compensated by the city.
