This is the heartbreaking moment an adorable three-year-old girl screams and cries in agony as firefighters try to free her fingers after she caught them in an escalator.

The unnamed girl, aged three, is said to have been playing near the moving steps when she curiously stuck out her right hand to touch the mechanism inside a shopping centre when her mum was not looking.

The fingers on her right hand were sucked into a narrow space between the escalator steps in Ezhou in Central China’s Hubei Province, with the girl’s mum alerted by her loud cries.

The brave girl manages to remain silent until the end of the clip, as firefighters begin moving the pieces apart.

She cries loudly into her mum’s shoulder as the rescue video cuts, with authorities saying her bleeding fingers were freed five minutes later.

She was taken to hospital for treatment, and the exact extent of her injuries is still unclear.

The girl’s mum, who had brought both her children shopping that day, admitted she failed to notice her daughter playing with the escalator steps.

The girl’s injuries are not believed to be severe.
