This is the moment a tied donkey is rescued from a forest fire that has devastated large areas of Gran Canaria and led to the evacuation of over 8,000 residents.

According to local media, firefighters have been battling intense forest fires in the mountains of the tourist island of Gran Canaria in the Spanish Canary Islands since Saturday evening.

The donkey, which is used for tourist rides, was filmed being rescued by firefighters in the central municipality of Tejeda.

The animal organisation ‘Leales.org’ shared the footage on Twitter where it has been widely circulated and the organisation claimed that the female donkey, known as a jenny, was tied up as the forest blaze was approaching the property where it was kept.

After being untied, the spooked donkey was transferred to stables in the town of San Mateo although ‘Leales.org’ criticised the time it took to move the animal.

The Gran Canaria fire has led to the preventative evacuation of over 8,000 residents in six municipalities, according to local media.

The blaze has reportedly destroyed about 3,400 hectares of terrain and the President of the Canary Islands, Angel Victor Torres, said on Sunday night that the fire has not been stabilised yet.
