This is the box of muffins that sparked a full-scale terror alert after a ticket inspector spotted them on a train and thought they were a bomb.

The incident took place over the weekend on a regional train heading towards the north German port city of Hamburg, when a call was made to the local station.

Regional and state police went to the train station and evacuated all the passengers from the train after the packet was spotted by a ticket inspector. Other train services were also stopped, the train station cleared of passengers and staff, and nearby streets closed as bomb disposal experts moved in.

Experts then carried out an x-ray of the box before opening it after revealing it contained nothing suspicious, and inside they discovered the muffins and cakes.

It is not known who the owner was of the box which had been forgotten and police posted an image online to try and track down the forgetful passenger.

The train service was resumed three hours later, with the 20 fireman, police officers and bomb disposal experts standing down shortly after.
