A Russian man is being prosecuted for breaking curfew as well as robbery after he mugged this elderly Russian woman as she shuffled towards a building entrance.

The babushka was filmed being attacked by the young thug on Fayzi Street in the city of Kazan in the south-western Russian republic of Tatarstan which has been on lockdown since 30th March, according to local media.

In the footage, viewed 100,000 times on social media, the old lady appears to be pushing a bag in front of her as she approaches a building entrance.

She is then seen being bundled to the ground by the hooded thug who apparently takes her bag and runs off while she struggles to her feet.

According to local media, the elderly victim reported the incident to the police who then reviewed the CCTV footage.

Officers were reportedly able to identify the suspect from the images and they arrested him at his home.

Local media said the suspect is a 32-year-old man who is known to the police for similar offences.

The victim’s bag included food and a purse worth a total of 6,000 RUB (64 GBP) which has already been paid back to the babushka, according to local media.

Meanwhile, the authorities have reportedly opened a criminal case for theft against the man as well an administrative charge of violating the Russian republic’s COVID-19 lockdown measures.

The investigation is ongoing.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Russia has registered 7,497 cases of COVID-19 and 58 related deaths.
