This is the moment a knife-wielding thug charges at a female police officer in Madrid before he is shot in the hip as onlookers gasp.

The startling scene was recorded by an onlooker in the Carabanchel neighbourhood of the Spanish capital Madrid after the cops had been called to a fight in the neighbourhood and they found a 23-year-old man in the street with a knife.

In the video, the man, who has not been named in reports, can be seen standing on the road next to some cars when he suddenly sprints at a female police officer.

The cop jogs backwards pointing her gun at the thug who takes a wild swipe at her with the blade.

A police car then comes rushing to the scene, speeding between the thug and blocking him between two parked cars.

Local media report the thug then tried to stab a police officer through the car window and another clip shows him surrounded by officers on the pavement.

He then sprints towards one of the cops and a shot is fired, hitting the thug in the hip and he can be seen limping.

According to neighbours interviewed by local media, the thug was taken to Gregorio Maranon Hospital in an ambulance. Reports state he was not seriously injured and it is unknown if charges will be pressed against him.

After the incident, The Unified Police Union (SUP) has said how important it is to supply Citizen Security agents with taser guns and the police syndicate will send a letter to the Police Council to demand the equipment.

It is unclear why the man, who reportedly has priors, was standing in the street with a knife and why he charged at the officers, who are investigating the incident.
