The suspect reportedly handed himself over to the police and confessed to suffocating his ex-girlfriend to death before placing her corpse in a sack and hiding it under his bed.
According to the victim’s father Crisanto Flores, he reported the suspect to the police and Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations for assaulting and threatening the life of his daughter a month ago, but no action was taken.
He said that Estefanie finished the relationship around the same time as he “beat and tried to strangle her”, but he would not accept her decision.
According to local media, Estefanie’s death is the 50th case of femicide in Peru so far this year.
The Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations reported that 149 women died of gender violence last year.
Meanwhile, there were a total of 113,727 cases of violence against women during 2018.
According to the figures, a femicide takes place in Peru every two days on average.
The investigation into Estefanie’s death is ongoing.
