A football fan has been jailed for almost 35 years for killing a 15-year-old schoolboy who was a fan of a rival team.

The court heard that the killer, identified as John Jairo Soto Ospina, who was 18 at the time, shot the younger man because he was a fan of a different football in an attack in Armenia, capital of Quindio department, located in the western area of Colombia.

The victim was following a team from Valle del Cauca, while the aggressor was following one from Antioquia, both teams from Colombia.

Among the testimonies taken into account by the judge in the case was that of the victim’s brother, also a minor, who heard the shots and was also able to describe the killer after seeing his face.

He said that Soto even spoke to him saying: “I’ve left your brother for you over there.”

Added to the evidence was the testimony of a woman who recounted what she was able to witness on the day of the events on which the crime was committed.

She said he had been laughing after the killing.

After analysing the testimonies presented by the Prosecutor’s Office, the judge in the case at the Fifth Criminal Circuit Court endorsed the arguments and considered Soto Ospina was guilty of aggravated homicide and illegal usage and possession of a firearm.

He was sentenced to 34 years and 10 months in prison.
