A young man who raped and tortured an elderly woman before setting her body on fire and feeding her heart to her dogs has been jailed for 26 years.
Igor Ribeiro Nascimento, 20, has been sentenced to 26 years and five months in jail and fined for the crimes of robbery, torture and two counts of corruption of minors.
The then 19-year-old committed the brutal crime on the afternoon of 25th June 2019, in the city of Aparecida de Goiania, in west-central Brazil.
Nascimento, along with another male and female, both of whom were 15, gathered in a square in the city centre to plan a robbery at the house of 64-year-old Thelma Mendonca de Carvalho.
The two males scaled her wall and entered her house. On finding the woman, they tied her up, gagged her, locked her in a room and raped her.
The girl initially stood outside watching, but later joined the pair to look for valuables.
The victim managed to ungag herself and shout for help, but she was restrained by the trio.
After the trio only found BRL 9 (GBP 1.26) and two mobile phones, they then tortured the elderly woman.
They stabbed her in the belly and cut her wrists.
Nascimento cut part of one of her breasts and ripped out her heart and part of her lung. The trio then threw the organs to her dogs.
Nascimento then threw a sheet on the body, doused it in flammable liquid and set it alight.
The trio threw earth and pieces of wood on the fire to disguise the smell of burnt flesh.
According to the police chief in charge of the case, the trio managed to dig a small hole in the bathroom, where they partially buried her charred body.
They then fled with the mobile phones, but returned later to steal a 55-inch TV, the woman’s fridge and a duvet.
The victim’s body was found two days later after neighbours became suspicious of the dogs’ constant barking. They called the woman’s daughter, who went to her house to discover the grim scene.
Nascimento was arrested in June 2019 and denied participating in the crime. However, the minors, who had also been apprehended, confessed all to the police.
Nascimento’s sentencing, which took place virtually, was reported by local media on 22nd September, though it is unclear if it took place prior to that date.
The fate of the other participants has not been reported.
