The body of a 19-year-old Romanian sex worker has been found in a swamp in Spain and the authorities suspect she was killed by mobsters.

The body of Florina Gogos was found in a swamp in the municipality of Albal in the south-eastern Spanish community of Valencia.

According to the newspaper Antena 3, Florina came to Spain to make some quick money with the idea of returning to Romania afterwards.

She reportedly spent various months working as a prostitute and shared an apartment with another Romanian sex worker who reported her companion missing on 8th January.

A hunter found the body of the teenager floating in a swamp in an advanced stage of decomposition and she was identified by her two tattoos.

Local media said CCTV footage has been found of the last time she was seen alive, getting into a white car, but the images were too blurry to see the number plates.

Albal mayor Ramon Mari said he believes the teen was killed by the Mafia, and was reported as saying: “These girls are alone, in an adventure, at the hands of mafias and assassins. No matter how many ordinances we make against prostitution, we can only fight with the efforts of the police and the Civil Guard.

“We all know these girls are being exploited by mafia networks, that they depend on these groups, but if they are told to say that they are there of their own free will, it is difficult to act.”

Mari recalled a similar incident 20 years ago when a young woman from the Czech Republic, Ivana Yutakova, was found shot dead but the case was never solved.

The mayor said he would make sure Florina’s body is repatriated for burial in Romania.

The local council held a minute’s silence for the young woman on 2nd February.

The local authorities have also announced a campaign against the exploitation of women and asked citizens to work with the police to solve this case and prevent future incidents.
