Cops probing what appeared to be a routine sudden death have arrested the victim’s teenage girlfriend after discovering a tiny hole that had pierced his nipple which she then confessed had been caused by a needle.
The incident was reported in the city of Aparecida de Goiania, in the central Brazilian state of Goias.
The 19-year-old Nicole Maria is suspected of killing Adailton Gomes, 24, with a hookah needle during an argument over a pastry brought from a funfair.
According to national newspaper G1, in her testimony, the teenager said she stabbed Gomes in self-defence during a fight.
Police Chief Eduardo Rodovalho, who is investigating the case, confirmed that the victim had a small perforation on the left side of his chest.
The wound was reportedly caused by a Hookah needle, which is used to pierce the aluminium foil of the smoking pipe that covers the coal.
Rodovalho told G1: “There was a perforation at the left nipple, caused at the moment when the couple was arguing, because of a pastry from the market. It seems that they went out to eat this pastry without her wanting to. She would have been upset and they started to argue. It looks like it was a very immature relationship.”
Maria told Civil Police that Gomes attacked her with a hookah during the argument.
Rodovalho said: “He had a broken hookah and she grabbed another part of that hookah and made the perforation and when he fell, she was beside herself.
“It was a very small hole in the nipple. If it is the cause of death, it will have been an absurd fatality.”
The police chief explained that the injury was minimal and they are awaiting the results of the autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
The victim’s mother, Maria das Graças de Abreu, 46, told G1 that the couple spent most of the day at her home.
She said: “After they arrived from the fair, he went with his sisters, aged 13 and 16, to her house. The girls stayed on the sidewalk while he went in to get the key. They said that afterwards, his girlfriend ran out screaming that he was dying.”
She added: “I want justice. She took a piece of me.”
The case is still being investigated by the Homicide Investigation Group, which is expected to hear more witnesses this week.
