The shocking incident took place in the town of Uddevalla in the Uddevalla Municipality in Vastra Gotaland County, in south-western Sweden.

Police have searched the man’s flat and found traces of blood everywhere, local media report. They then made a gruesome discovery – the young girl’s severed head in a suitcase, wrapped in aluminium foil and sticky tape.

Iraqi-born Tishko S. has now been charged with her murder.

Her mother Linda Andersson had reported Wilma missing on 14th November 2019. A total of 5,000 experts, police officers and volunteers then searched for the young girl in one of the country’s largest searches ever.

By 22nd November, her severed head had been found by investigators.

The accused denies killing Wilma but local media say he has never explained how his DNA made its way onto a kitchen knife along with Wilma’s blood, and how his fingerprints were found on the tape that wrapped the head.

The rest of Wilma’s body has not been located yet.

Wilma’s friends say that the accused was very controlling, telling Wilma what she could wear, where she could go and who she could see.

They broke up but she repeatedly returned to his flat to pick up personal belongings.

Her mother Linda told local TV: “I kept ringing the doorbell. But he only said that they had had an argument and that she just ran out of the apartment.”

Wilma’s coat and handbag were still hanging in the closet. And her mum says she would never have left the flat without them.

The trial begins on 26th May.
