A 17-year-old girl has died in hospital after having her vagina and anus “practically destroyed” in a brutal gang rape allegedly carried out by four of her teenage friends.

The incident took place in the region of Oruro in western Bolivia and on Friday the autopsy was undertaken on the body of Jhoselin Monica Calani, according to the prosecutor of Oruro, Orlando Zapata.

The incident took place on 16th October, after the four suspects, all aged between 16 and 17, agreed to meet with the victim and three other friends in order to have a drink in a house in the city of Oruro, in the western Bolivian department of the same name, prosecutors told local media.

Reports state the victim fell unconscious after having two drinks and when she woke up “she did not remember what had happened, she was very cold, and she had a strong pain in her hips, so she was having difficulty standing up,” according to the Public Ministry.

Local media report that the teenage girl managed to leave the house and was helped by pedestrians who took her to a hospital where she was admitted in a critical condition.

She reportedly underwent reconstructive surgery but eventually died from her injuries. Prosecutor Zapata said the suspects “took advantage of their friendship situation, they started sexually abusing her getting into levels that are incredible to describe. They practically destroyed the anal and vaginal area”.

The suspects have been arrested and are currently locked in custody as a preventative measure as they are being investigated for rape.

The victim’s mother told reporters: “We are suffering instead of celebrating her graduation. I want to tell you those guys cannot go out, justice must be carried out, they must pay for what they did, they should not be punished with a minor penalty.”

The Public Ministry will now be able to add the crime of femicide to the investigation after the teen’s death, according to Zapata who added that investigators are still waiting for forensic results to find out if the suspects consumed drugs on the night of the incident.

The suspects reportedly face 30 years in prison if found guilty.

The incident comes after seven gang rapes were reported in Bolivia between January and April 2019. The lawyer of the most-recent victim described as “the worst in the country this year” because of the “brutality” involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
