Victim Kganya Mokhele died when the bookshelf fell on him as he tried to reach a toy at the nursery school in Bedfordview, South Africa, on Tuesday, 7th March.

And now his family say CCTV footage from the classroom shows that all four teachers in the room at the time were on their mobile phones when he died.

Grandfather Sipho Radebe has accused the school of lying to cover up their part in Kganya’s death.

Radebe told local media that the creche also tried to deny them access to the CCTV footage and only allowed them to see it under pressure.

And an apparent discrepancy in the time coding reportedly shows that the tragedy happened an hour earlier than it was initially reported.

Radebe also claimed that the nursery waited an hour to contact the police and his family.

Paramedics took Kganya to nearby Linksfield Hospital, Johannesburg, but he was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival.

Kganya’s devastated dad, Ntaote Mokhele, made it to the school in about five minutes, according to local media.

He reportedly asked the police what took them so long, when they arrived at the school, and they said that they were only called 10 minutes before the family arrived.

Ntaote also told local media: “He reached out to fetch something.

“They displayed toys for them to fetch and play with. Any child could have reached out to take that toy or whatever and it could have fallen on anyone.”

He also claimed the teachers were “sitting in one corner chatting” and not paying attention to the children across the room from them.

Little Ashford nursery has said it is “cooperating fully with the authorities and will ensure a full investigation is conducted”.
