Pic shows: Suspect Liu Chunlu, 32. These are the first images of Chinese police arresting a man suspected of starting a fire at a karaoke bar that killed 18 people and injured five others. Liu Chunlu, 32, allegedly blocked off the entrance of the business known as ‘Languifang KTV’ using his motorcycle before setting it on fire, causing flames to engulf the establishment just after midnight. The fire service in the city of Yingde, which under the administration of the prefecture-level city Qingyuan in South China’s Guangdong Province, put out the flames but found the karaoke bar burned down. The Qingyuan Public Security Bureau said 18 people had died in the blaze and that five more were injured and taken to hospital. The extent of their injuries, however, are currently unclear. Footage provided to Asia Wire showed the moment police officers apprehended Liu outside his home just hours after having offered a 200,000 RMB (22,718 GBP) for his whereabouts. Liu appears to admit to the arson on the spot and also confirms Chinese state-run media reports that a drunken altercation had led to the incident. The policeman asks him: "What time did you arrive back here?" Liu answers: "Before dawn." Policeman: "You were back here before dawn?" Liu: "Yes. But don’t touch my things. I have to return them to my father." Policeman: "Fine, fine. Don’t touch anything. What’s your name?" Liu: "Liu Chunlu [...]." Policeman: "And what have you done?" Liu: "I set fire to my motorbike." Policeman: "Where?" Liu: "Languifang." Policeman: "Why did you do it?" Liu: "I had too much to drink, got into a fight." The arson incident is expected to cause a large-scale enquiry into the safety of karaoke establishments. (ends)
