A Syrian man who entered Austria posing as a teenager has been sentenced to 15 years in a secure unit for murdering his teen ex-girlfriend.

Jazan A., 20, was found guilty by the court in the city of Wiener Neustadt in the Austrian state of Lower Austria where the body of his 16-year-old girl victim was found hidden under a bush in a park.

The gruesome discovery was made by her own mother who went searching through town after the victim failed to arrive home from a night out with friends.

The body of Manuela K., who was the defendant’s ex-girlfriend, was found covered by twigs and leaves in a park.

The case took three days and over 20 witnesses were called, resulting in a 15-year sentence for Jazan A. in a psychiatric facility.

According to the court, the then 19-year-old lured his ex-girlfriend to the park after a party where he then strangled her.

The court heard that the man had used the belt from his trousers in the attack.

The girl’s mother spoke at the trial and spoke in tears about her daughter’s relationship with the Syrian, explaining how he dominated her, was always jealous and even banned her wearing certain clothes.

She said in court: “You took my child way from me.”

However, Jazan A. maintained his innocence, telling the court: “I believe in your justice system, but I did not commit murder. I have caused enough trouble in my life, but I am still young and young people make mistakes, but I did not commit murder.”

Judge Kurt Weisgram said: “He has failed to show any sign of remorse.”

A court psychiatrist diagnosed him with a mixed personality disorder, sparing him jail as a result.

It is believed that Jazan A. will appeal the sentence.

The defendant originally arrived in Austria as part of a family reunification program after claiming to be 15. However, shortly after his arrival he started racking up a criminal record, resulting in his asylum being revoked.

However, he had not been deported by the authorities when he murdered his teenage girlfriend.

Speaking for the first time about her loss, Manuela’s mother, aged 41, said her daughter was a “fun-loving, good girl whose heart was open to everyone”.

She said: “Of course, I watched my little girl closely and told her many times that I was worried for her. But he was Manuela’s first love and for that reason I accepted him.”
