A Syrian family’s holiday has ended in tragedy after an eight-year-old boy went swimming and drowned in a lake in Germany.

Little Agid drowned in Inselsee Lake in the district of Luneburg in the German state of Lower Saxony on 8th June.

According to the Luneburg Police, the little boy was resuscitated by rescue services and taken to a nearby hospital, but died later that evening.

The eight-year-old boy’s family fled Syria and moved to Germany in search of a better life in 2015.

After spending the last six years settling down and adjusting to the European climate, the family decided to go on a trip to Inselsee Lake in the municipality of Scharnebeck where they were planning to enjoy the warm summer weather.

Some time after they arrived at their holiday destination, Agid’s father Ali A. ,33, noticed that his son was missing.

He said: “At first he was still playing on the bank, but suddenly we could no longer see him. We immediately called the police.”

A search team consisting of paramedics, firemen, and divers from the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) searched for the little boy, whose body was soon discovered underwater.

The police said: “Half an hour later, we received the report, we found the boy’s lifeless body underwater at Inselsee Lake. The paramedics took the child with them and resuscitation began immediately. About half an hour later the child was driven to the hospital.”

However, little Agid failed to recover from the accident and died in hospital.

His heartbroken grandfather Dahir, 57, said: “They just wanted to go to the lake. Then I heard that Agid had drowned – the worst news I have ever received. For the first time since I came to Germany, I wake up in the morning knowing that I will never see Agid again. It’s unbearable.”

He added: “Agid wanted me to come to the lake, but I was tired. Agid has two siblings and it’s incomprehensible to them that they can no longer see their brother. The way they suffer now – it breaks my heart. I wish all of us a lot of strength so we can cope with Agid’s death.”

Ali A. said: “My children can swim. We taught them how to and they also learned in school. I don’t know what really happened. I advise all families not go to Inselsee Lake with their children. It is dangerous. And if they do, they should never leave their children out of sight, not even for a second.”

The DLRG reported that the main reasons for fatal swimming accidents are carelessness and overconfidence by both children and adults.
