Swiss Woman Dies After Being Swallowed By Volcano

A Swiss woman has died while ascending a volcano in Ecuador when the icy floor opened up beneath her feet and ‘swallowed’ her and two colleagues who were both injured.

The incident took place at around 6am on 3rd November when the climbers were ascending the 5,897-metre (19,347-foot) Cotopaxi Volcano in the Andes Mountains in the northern Ecuadorian province of Cotopaxi.

Female Swiss climber Corina Puentener, 57, died when she fell into the chasm while her colleagues, identified as 58-year-old Philip Zehnder and 50-year-old Roland Meier, were both injured, according to local media.

The injured climbers were taken to the Jose Ribas Shelter by mountain guides for a medical examination and one of the men was airlifted to a hospital in the Ecuadorian capital Quito, according to reports.

The incident occurred when a group of six, four climbers and two guides, was ascending to the peak and the ice reportedly spit beneath their feet.

Local media said that the authorities have managed to retrieve the woman’s dead body.

It is unclear whether the incident is being investigated.
