Victim Esteban ‘Juje’ Bellido, 39, was gunned down as was dropping off his car to be fixed at a garage in the town of Virrey del Pino, in La Matanza Partido, in Argentina’s Buenos Aires Province, on Sunday, 30th October, at around 11am.

Bellido was shot in the back, according to local media, as he tried to hide when the heavily armed squad stormed the building.

Local media reported that 11 officers involved in the raid – eight men and three women – have been arrested.

Homicide prosecutor Gaston Duplaa has ordered forensic tests on their guns to find whose weapon killed Bellido.

It is believed that the unit – the Immediate Operations Tactical Unit (UTOI), a type of SWAT unit – had mistaken him for a drug dealer.

In fact, Bellido was a devoted family man whose latest baby had been born just two weeks before he was shot dead.

He had recently started a new job at a soft drinks company and needed to get his car working to take his newborn to the paedtrician.

Bellido’s loved family has staged a protest to demand justice over the killing.

His sister-in-law Karina told local media that the police had “itchy trigger fingers” (‘gatillo facil’) and that Bellido had nothing to do with drugs and was shot for no reason.

Karina said: “My brother-in-law was there because he had taken the car to the workshop. He was happy because he became a father just 15 days ago and he needed to fix it so he could take the newborn to the paediatrician.

“The police entered with gunfire, he ran to take cover and it was there that he was shot in the back. We still don’t know how many shots he received.”

Karina added: “He was happy because he was finally able to work at the Manaus (soft drink) company, where he started the trial period. After the pandemic, he had become unemployed from the Duracril company and has remained since then at the point of odd jobs.

“Now he was happy because he had a decent job to support his family.”

Bellido was a father to a newborn and the biological dad of a two-year-old girl. He was stepfather to an eight-year-old boy who his partner had had with her previous partner.

Karina said: “There were two children that were his but he was the father of the eldest’s heart. He loved him as if he were his own son.”

An Internal Affairs audit by the Buenos Aires Ministry of Security has resulted in 11 officers being detained.

Experts have so far found no evidence of any non-police firearms at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing pending the results of the autopsy.
