Swallowed Toothpick Pierces 2 Holes In Tots Stomach

A 16-month-old girl has undergone surgery to remove a toothpick the poor tot swallowed which ended up piercing two holes in her intestinal wall.

The three-centimetre long toothpick was removed from little Feifei at the Huai’an Women’s and Children’s Health Care Hospital in the city of Huai’an located in the eastern Chinese province of Jiangsu.

Doctor Wang Shouqing told local media: “At first, the child was just vomiting, but soon the symptoms got worse and worse, including fever and bloating.

“X-ray checks showed gas beneath the diaphragm, indicating perforation of the abdominal cavity. Then we checked a CT scan again, and discovered a non-metallic object about three centimetres long.

“A laparoscopy revealed that all the symptoms were caused by a toothpick, about three centimetres long, with two holes through the intestinal wall.”

Luckily, the toothpick was successfully removed during surgery.

Doctor Shouqing continued: “One end of the toothpick is very sharp. If it stayed there a long time, there may have been a lot of holes, infection, then the child’s life may have been at risk.”

According to local media, the operation was a success and little Feifei is recovering from her ordeal.
